Brewster Hjorth Architects are a medium-sized practice working in the Surry Hills area of Sydney, New South Wales. During my year working there, I was given an increasing design responsibility within a small project team. Projects included Libraries, Community Centres and new proposals for the Sydney Olympic Aquatics Centre in the Harbour. Working closely with the project architect, I designed, collated and distributed packages for feasibility, DA and DD stages of design as well as being responsible for the 3d modelling of the projects. In addition to the new country, climate and timezone, I had to quickly adjust to new operating systems, design programmes and building standards within the workplace, testing my character and expertise all at once! During this year, I was also completing the first year of my Masters degree programme at Cardiff University, which involved the completion of a university design project alongside my professional work. A challenging and engaging time, I believe this year was one of the most influential, both personally and professionally.
Key roles and responsibilities:
Designing, drafting and issuing drawing packages
Elevational Studies and Analysis
Solar Shading Analysis
Program design and submission
Attendance and presentation at Community Consultation meetings
Landscaping design solutions
Co-ordination and correspondence with client and design team
Leading, organising and participating in progress meetings
Presentational skills of 3D visualisations, presentation and exhibition boards

Second Placement (6months):
Throughout my second placement, I had a greater confidence in my own understanding and capability as well as a genuine excitement for the diverse range of projects I was involved in. From conservation of historic landmarks such as the regeneration of the former Armagh Gaol into a spa hotel, through to stadia design such as Ravenhill rugby ground and Windsor Park’s football stadium, I was constantly learning and adapting my skillset to approach different building typologies.
Key roles and responsibilities:
Drafting and issuing drawings at different stages of design development
Compiling of FPT packages
Corresponding and coordinating clients, consultants and the design team
Carrying out building and condition surveys
Demonstrating understanding parameters, requirements/restrictions of governing bodies: building control, N.I.E.A

First Placement (6months):
During my first work placement of 6months, I embraced the steep learning curve and gained invaluable skills and knowledge that not only have created the foundation to my understanding in the work place but also fuelled my design work in University. I was exposed to a range of interesting projects covering many different building sectors and typologies, most notable being the conservations projects of Riddel Hall at Queen’s University, the Crumlin Road Gaol Visitor and Conference Centre and the cross-community centre at Templemore Avenue.
Key roles and responsibilities:
Drafting drawings in support of Feasibility, Planning and Tender packages
Presentational skills including; 3D modelling and visualisation, rendering, sketches and fly-throughs
Presentation boards for meetings and public viewings
Power-points and written documents at various stages of design development
Throughout my time spent on Placement I believe I have grown both personally and professionally and as a result I feel more capable and comfortable in a working environment. Through observation and participation in a wide spectrum of projects at varying stages of development, I have been able to learn new skills and apply existing knowledge from my time in University to relevant projects within the workplace.
