The 2015 Nepal Earthquake killed more than 8000 people and injured more than twice as many. With a moment magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli magnitude of IX, it was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake. Thousands of people were left homeless, with entire villages flattened across many districts in the country.

The Sindhupalchowk District is one of the least developed districts in Nepal. The terrain and narrow roads in this district have drastically slowed relief efforts. Close to the epicentre of the earthquake, this region was hit hard and even two years on, the after-effects are visible: illustrated by the one-storey corrugated-iron sheds that make up some of these remote villages.

Thulo Pakhar is one such village that was selected by All Hands for help to construct two new schools: one in the heart of the village and one in a remote valley location a 30 minute bus ride away. Nearing the end of the two projects, the coordinators surprised all volunteers by introducing a third school project that was made possible due to both other schools coming in under time and under budget - a fantastic result for the volunteers, the charity and the pupils of Janakalyan.
